The Wondrous Drama

I know someone who has always had a lot of courage.  One day I asked her how did you develop your courage?  She said, “Well, when I was a little girl, growing up in Great Britain there was a popular brand of beer called Courage Beer.  There were large billboards everywhere advertising this beer.  There was a big sign right near my house with the word, ‘Courage’ and a big lion on it.

“Every day when I was walking to school and I was just learning to read, I would read that world “Courage” and I would think a lot about what it means to be courageous and then I would try to be that.  I really think that that was what gave me courage.”

After Denise told me this story I thought about it and about how amazing it was that she had that sign near her house as she was growing up.  What luck!  Or is it luck?  What a wonderful drama!!  And how was it that she happened to pay attention to it, and that the beer part of the ad didn’t make an impression on her.

I had an experience a few years ago when I was going through some things in my life and I used to go down to Toronto every week to visit my son in the bookstore that he was running.  Right next to the bookstore was a clothing store with the name in big letters on the front of it, “Courage, My Love”.

Every week it seemed just as I was feeling a little bit down I would walk past that store and my eyes would go to the letters of the sign and I would smile and I would feel that God was saying to me, “Courage, my Love”  And I would say thank you and that was all it took to lift my spirits.

Since that time (and the store is gone now), if I ever feel any sort of lacking in courage, I remember that sign and I smile and say thanks in my thoughts and I feel very courageous.  I have wonderful conversations with God in this way.

All I can say is what a wondrous drama!  Exactly perfect.

Many times when I am grocery shopping and I am talking to God in my mind asking questions about things, suddenly the mall music which I had been before unaware of, comes into my awareness and the words of the song are exactly what I needed to hear as the answer to my question.

I’ll say something to God like this, “What is the virtue that I need to use in this situation?” and then the song will say, “All you need is love”.  I laugh so much and say, okay, thanks, you’re right, dearest One.  This happens all the time to me.

All I can say is what a wondrous drama!!

I too have a history with billboards. In Los Angeles, there was a billboard on the side of the Meher Baba Center and it seemed that it always had an advertisement on it that had a message for me. It was uncanny.

Once, years later, while visiting LA from out of town, and after losing about $1,500 in a poker game, I decided to go to a meeting there. And on my way, I said to myself, “I wonder what the billboard will say tonight.”

When I got there, I was astonished to see it advertising a Bill Cosby film, entitled, “You Bet Your Life.”

So that is what I decided to do — bet my life on God.
