Extra Weight and the Ego’s Need for Protection

A reader asked me what is the best way to let go of extra weight that was put on due to the ego’s fear and need for protection several years ago. Here are my thoughts that I shared with her:

This is an all too common reflex of the ego, which is in its essence, an affirmation of separateness. The ego’s nature is to revert to any measure that it thinks will give it a sense of protection and separateness.

Once that is clearly understood, the question should become, not so much how to let go of the extra weight, but of how to allow consciousness to illuminate all of life; or in other words, how to  take back control from the ego. It’s a matter of allowing the love deep within to shine out. And in that light, you will discover there is nothing to fear.

When the ego takes control of life, there is a restriction in the  expression of the Self. The infinite love, knowledge, power, bliss and light that we are all part of gets transplanted by a very limited sense of self which we think is going to keep us safe.

It’s like an infant that thinks a security blanket is going to keep it safe. And that is all good and fine, because an infant eventually grows up and lets go of that false sense of security. But how long can an adult remain under the sway of the ego’s self-created illusory defenses? Lifetimes.

To tackle the weight issue without tackling the issue of ego and consciousness is a losing proposition. For no sooner than the weight is lost does the ego finds another way to sabotage consciousness. Maybe with an illness, maybe with an addiction, maybe with financial loss, maybe with financial gain. For even financial gain, or wealth, can create a false sense of value, and with it, delusion.

It doesn’t matter, because the ego doesn’t care. It wants to stay separate. It’s as if the ego is a stream that doesn’t want to flow into the ocean.

But the ego, which is a function of unconsciousness, is forever going to feel incomplete. And instead of expressing itself through the interplay of love and creativity, it seeks self-expression  by setting itself up as someone who is superior than others, or inferior to others. And it can spend a whole lifetime of success or failure, just to prove its superiority or inferiority.

People, or perhaps I should say souls, go through lifetime after lifetime with false identities: “I am rich, I am poor, I am beautiful, I am ugly, I am smart, I am stupid, I am fat, I am skinny,” etc. Fortunately, a point finally comes when the soul gets fed up with this waste of time, and inwardly starts to realize that it is something far more than these false and finite identifications. That’s when longing begins.

That is when the path home begins.  This is when synchronicity and a sense of oneness and wholeness begin to take over the course of life. This is when the Infinite begins to long for you even more than you long for it. This is when love is awakened deep within. Fan that flame of love and your path will never be in darkness.

As far as the extra weight is concerned, the first step is to identify not with the weight, but with the fact that you are not your body. You body is but a temporary expression of the soul. You are a spiritual being, infinite in essence. Your body cannot limit you, hamper you, or control you. For some day your body will die, but you will continue to shine on as light, as love, as infiinite knowledge, power, and bliss.

When you finally believe this deep within, the weight issue will not be an issue, and it will take care of itself.

By raising the question as you did, you have demonstrated that you have an awakened sense of consciousness, and that the ego cannot control you like it used to.
