We Don’t Have Enough

We live in a culture that that conditions our thinking that we don’t have enough. We are told over and over again in media messages and advertising that we need bigger, better, and faster things to be happy. I remember reading the words of poet, Francis Brabazon, who picked up on this theme by writing that the minute waltz was down to something like 54 seconds.

Why is it that we can’t live with contentment, which brings happiness? Instead, we live in a hypothetical future where everything promises to bring happiness but never does. How many times do we have to be fooled before we stop falling for the promise?

This delusional thinking comes from living on the surface of things. It comes from self-identification with possessions. It comes from equating happiness with having more stuff. It comes from forgetting the essence of who we are, the essence of who we were, and the essence of who we will always be. And that is consciousness — indestructible, eternal, imperishable.

Consciousness is ours to enjoy when we can strip our minds of the delusion of false identification. With each day of our lives, we can either strengthen the delusion, or peel it away.

With each layer of delusion peeled away, we enter ever so slightly more into the inner world of consciousness, of oneness, of joy.

The other day, a friend sent me the following cartoon, which was the inspiration for this post. I think it illustrates this topic perfectly.

The Burden
