There is an ever-growing number of people who believe that a great change to the world will occur on December 21, 2012. Why this date?
As David Icke wryly observed:
The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things:
Building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and
Sacrificing Virgins.Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it’s likely they’ve got the end of the world right as well.
For others, it is because of an increasing fascination that the giant mythical planet Nibiru, or Planet X. They fear that it will pass so close to earth that it will cause mass destruction of life from the expected earthquakes and tsunamis.
And then there are some jumping on the bandwagon of doom (go to Google and see for yourself) saying if Nibiru doesn’t get us, there is always World War III, or a worldwide plague, or massive earthquakes, or even the worldwide closing of banks.
This belief in a worldwide apocalyptic transformation of life as we know it will continue to grow. Each bit of bad news will be looked upon as another conclusive bit of evidence of disaster.
We live in a society that follows the consensus of opinion. My advice: Don’t be afraid. For fear breeds more fear. And it invades the province of the heart – love.
The biggest challenge of humanity is not in surviving a rendezvous with a hypothetical planet; it’s in the raising of its collective consciousness. I don’t think the Mayans were pointing to the end of the world; I think they were pointing to a time when the vibratory rate on the planet becomes heightened, a time when the pursuit of selfish interest is no longer an option.
This time leading up to 2012 is a time for love, not fear. As the great master and poet Rumi wrote almost 800 years ago, “Move from within. Don’t move the way fear wants you to move.” It’s a time to discover that we are all interconnected, living on the same earth, breathing the same air, and dependent upon each other for the planet’s survival.
I think the true significance of the Mayan calendar ending on December 21, 2012 is similar to the significance of the last day on a school calendar. It’s time to graduate. It’s time to move on to broader horizons.
But to graduate from high school or college requires the passing of numerous tests that require focus and attention. You have a choice in approaching a test. You can be afraid, or you can prepare for it.
In the next few years leading up to 2012, I will have tests to pass as well. To prepare for the challenges of the various tests, I need to embrace life; not flee from life. I need to discover more fully the essence of life – consciousness – by diving deep within. For deep within is where I find my connection to others.
Here’s an analogy that might help me to explain this idea. Imagine that you are at the beach. A big storm is nearing and the waves are huge. When you step out about waist deep into the water a big wave comes and violently knocks you down. You stand up and immediately get knocked down again. You conclude that it’s not a good day to be at the beach.
But if you can get out a little deeper into the water you have another option. If you see a big wave about to crash in on you, you can dive under the surface. The wave passes right over you. Go out a little farther and you can perhaps catch a wave and body surf and experience a harmony with the ocean.
The storm, metaphorically speaking, is what is happening in the world. I see and hear about stress and crisis everywhere I go. Record high oil prices, global warming, World War III possibilities, over-population, and about 83% of that over-populated world of six billion people without access to fresh water. I see an expansion of terrorism, new anti-biotic resistant disease, and fear of a world wide financial collapse.
That’s the bleak perspective. But the holistic perspective is that there is now an unparalleled opportunity to help other people. To have a world full of people helping each other is to have a world of people awakening to the possibilities of love. That is how the planet evolves.
In other words, a crisis is an opportunity. To view it as only a threat is to miss the wave.
I was on a forum the other day devoted to 2012 and many of the posts were about how to survive. Some people were talking about building bunkers. Some were discussing plans to move away from big city life. Some people are making plans to buy guns and stockpile food and supplies. Everyone for him/herself is the impression being created.
But that’s a perception of 2012 from only waist deep water. I look at it as a chance to go deeper. I want to experience the full possibilities of spirit. I want to catch a wave instead of being crushed by a wave.
I was listening to psychic David Wilcox speak about 2012 and he said something I thought had the ring of truth to it. He said that 2012 was an opportunity for unparalleled spiritual growth.
Wilcox also said that anyone who gives more than 50% of their energies to serving others (as opposed to serving self) would have a successful transition into this new world, or this new humanity. He said the new world would be 100 times more harmonious than it is right now and that a self-centered life would be impossible to live.
From that perspective, the problems of the world are indeed a great opportunity. I’m not going to survive by building bunkers and hoarding guns and ammunition. If I survive, it will be by experiencing the oneness that exists amongst us. Not by fleeing humanity, but by embracing it. Not by hoarding our food, but by sharing it. Not by greed, but by selflessness.
Fear is a product of the mind. The mind focuses on self. The heart focuses on others. And the product of the heart is love. It’s our greatest resource.

Hi Greg! Thanks for this incredible post and how right you are! Fear disables us while love enables us. I choose love and helping others over the bunkers and guns!
Let’s help others choose wisely as well! Jenny
I’m interested in knowing what makes everything (including the Mayans) so sure that what is predicted is the “end of the Earth” in 2012.
Certainly, they could have calculated/predicted a transformational change, but are they certain that such a change is “the end”, and not some other form of change?
What is the transformation is something other than “the end”? What if it is a new beginning?
What an awesome post. Thank you for a beautiful and insightful message.
Thanks Maria. The world is looking more and more like a gigantic crisis which gives us all a major opportunity to discover the depths of our humanity.
Your body will dissapear, yet love, and joy, those things remain! Be joyess the hour is approaching… time is indeed precious
