The subconscious is the source of all great works of art – paintings, writings, music, architecture and scientific breakthroughs. What would have been ordinary becomes extraordinary when thought is transcended, when a connection is made with the infinite intelligence that pervades all of creation.
Works of genius always stem from this inner realm, as does all effortlessness. And the reason why is that the subconscious is our connection to the unlimited, the Divine, the source of all light and beauty.
When we live by our conscious mind alone we greatly limit our experiences of life. It is the subconscious that is rooted in the infinity of the universal mind — the source of everything in creation. That is, everything in the universe first existed as a thought in the universal mind. The outer is an unfoldment of the inner. First the vision, then the painting. First the blueprint, then the building.
The universal mind is a perpetual source of power. When it flows through us without barriers and impediments, we are genius. When the flow is blocked, we are frustrated and mediocre. The connection, and thus the success or failure of this flow, is the subconscious.
It follows logically that if our outer world is an objectification of our inner world, then it also follows that we can sculpt it with precision. We do this with concentrated thought which we impress upon the subconscious.
There are two aspects of this process, of this reflecting the inner onto the outer: the general and the specific. The general affects the overall tenor of life. The specific is reserved for specific end results.
Looking at the general aspect, we see the state of affairs of our life determined by the impressions of our mind. Our thoughts, our words, and our actions all leave their imprint on the subconscious. This affects our identity, our outlook on life, our health, what and who we are attracted to, and most importantly, if we have an inner connection to our source of being. In essence, it determines the general success or failure as well as the happiness or misery of life. When the Prophet Zoroaster gave the precepts, “Good words, good thoughts, and good actions,” he was giving advice of crucial importance for life’s success. These are the building blocks of a harmonious life. Happiness is not an accident.
The specific aspect is governed by visualization. What is your soul longing to express in this life? If the expression would come from being a dancer, then that is the focus of the visualization. If it is being a doctor in the Third World, then that is the focus. It doesn’t matter what the soul’s desired expression is, what matters is to be true to it. “Know thyself.”
Emerson, in his essay on Greatness, wrote:
Whilst he shares with all mankind the gift of reason and the moral sentiment, there is a teaching for him from within which is leading him in a new path, and the more it is trusted, the more it separates and signalizes him, making him more important and necessary to society. We call this specialty the bias of each individual. And none of us will ever accomplish anything excellent or commanding except by listening to this whisper unique to everyone of us.
How do you see your soul expressing itself? This could be anything from a new career, to a new romantic partner, or a new job offer, or even a new you becoming more healthy and fit, or more beautiful or handsome. Visualization is the creation of mental images. The more precise and exact, the more successful will be the outcome.
The following example is a metaphor that might shed some light on this subject: Imagine you told your significant other to bring something home for dinner. When dinner finally arrives, because there were no specifics, the possibilities range anywhere from a Big Mac and fries to sushi. But if you had given precise details, such as palek paneer, basmati rice, two samosas, curried salmon, plus a cold bottle of Taj Mahal beer, you would have a much better chance of enjoying your meal, because it is precisely what you wanted.
I remember being 12-years-old and building a tree house with my friends. There was nothing precise about it. We would find boards here and there, different sizes, different thicknesses, and different types of wood, and nail them together and into the branches of a tree. In other words, we had no blueprint. We had no vision for the finished tree house. And the final result was disjointed and ugly. No linear form, no symmetry. No harmony. Just a pile of wood nailed together.
I share this childhood story because most people, in their daily lives, don’t plan inwardly what they want to create outwardly any better. They don’t put in the details of how they wish their life to unfold, or to manifest. The clearer and more detailed the image created in the mind, the more successfully it will manifest. If we don’t do this consciously, we fare no better than someone playing golf blindfolded.
Imagine that you and your family want to build a house. You will sit down with an architect or a contractor and go over the house plans in minute detail. How many square feet, now many floors, how many bedrooms, how many bathrooms, how many windows, what type of kitchen cabinets, what type of flooring. Nothing is left to chance; the builder doesn’t improvise because he runs short on bricks. You have a model to look at and the finished product will be a perfect reflection of it.
But people, for the most part, don’t do that type of planning in their inner world for how they want their outer world to unfold. You’re probably familiar with the saying, “If it was easy, everybody would do it.” And this isn’t easy.
The proper materials in building a house are lumber, glass, steel, bricks, tiles, nails, wiring, pipes, etc. The proper materials needed for creating a mental image are concentrated, sagacious thoughts. This takes skill in the art of concentration. To create the skill requires practice. You must be able to control your mind. This is only possible with conscious awareness. And conscious awareness comes from observing the mind, observing your thoughts. Being still. Being patient. Harnessing will power.
The concentrated thoughts create the image on the subconscious mind. This is akin to you writing down for your partner what you want for dinner. And like your partner placing your dinner order with the Indian restaurant, the subconscious mind places your order with the universal mind — the source of everything in creation.
The subconscious mind, the seat of intuition, is always connected to the universal. It is due to this that beautiful thoughts create a beautiful life and ugly thoughts create an ugly life. It’s no different than the images you create on a film with your camera. The recording on film of a beautiful image results in a beautiful photograph. As above, so below. It can’t be any other way. The outer is always a reflection of the inner. The images impressed upon the subconscious mind are processed by the universal mind, and the end result is a perfect outer reflection of what began as an inner mental image. How that happens is not our concern. Rather, that it happens should always be in the forefront of our thinking.
Consider an artist who draws a rendering of a building. The artist is not trained in construction. That is not his or her concern. The artist has one job, to create a clear image of the imagined building. And when that image is complete, then and only then can the process of construction get under way. The builders take it from there.
Likewise, if you give your subconscious the precise details of what your soul longs to express in this life, of how you see your spirit working in harmony with the divine, it will conspire with the universal to bring that into fruition. If your vision is inspired by a heightened expression of love, of transforming darkness into light, and separation into oneness, then the forces enlisted on your behalf are universal. This is one of the great spiritual laws governing the universe.
In essence, you are being bathed in light, to be made ready for a new dawn.
