Personal Magnetism

If you ever need an example of what personal magnetism is, I once read that Henry David Thoureau walked 20 miles to hear Emerson give a lecture. What was it in Emerson that had the power to inspire Thoreau to walk so far? After all, there were thousands of other people much closer who would have been happy to give Thoreau advice.

In human relationships, personal magnetism has a healing effect. It soothes, it pacifies, it energizes, it empowers and it enlivens. It does this by aligning all of the energies within you to work in harmony. It’s like a laser beam of light, which has all of its light waves aligned coherently. Ordinary light is scattered energy while a laser light is focused, and thus, powerful.

So how does a person become more magnetic, so that his or her influence has this beneficial and transforming aspect to it? If you want to develop personal magnetism, you do it by being on purpose, by being focused, by having the head and heart in harmony, by connecting to the source of being. This will lead to a peacefulness, a gentleness, a gracefulness that attracts others, like a candle attracting a moth.

If you, for instance, have a longing to be a musician, and every cell in your body has this same purpose, then you are like the light of the laser beam. You have a power, a will power, that will accomplish your goal. Of this there is certainty and this certainty is the eraser of doubt. When a person is without doubt, all of his or her energies race towards the goal. Hesitation is gone. This has a magnetizing effect. This is enthusiasm. This is passion. This is life filled with electricity. And that is personal magnetism.

There is no missing the magnetic power of such a person. It’s like a river in flood. It’s a force of nature.

Isn’t that why so many people watch sports? To want to see an athlete unleash his or her power. To see electricity personified. Why else would people invest so much time and money into watching a sporting event? It’s because everybody wants to see greatness. It’s as if they believe it’s contagious. They want to channel that energy and passion into their own lives.

To watch an athletic superstar perform is to witness the manifestation of coherent energy. For it was hours and hours of dedicated effort towards a single goal that made their athleticism possible. But I’m not here to talk about athletics. This site is about holistic personal development. Discovering the wholeness of being, consciousness.

For not everyone has the physical gifts to be an athlete. But everybody does have within them full and complete consciousness. Yes, everyone. It might not be evident, but it’s there. And when the impediments to consciousness are removed, the greatest and most powerful form of magnetism is activated. It’s like all the tumblers in a bank vault fall into place and the door to the vault is opened and infinite riches become available to you.

With regards to consciousness, most people have so many energies going in so many different directions, that no thought is ever given as to how to access consciousness. To a bank robber, there might be a fortune behind the doors of the vault, but unless he can open the vault door, it’s of no avail. That’s how it is with consciousness. It’s infinite, and infinitely powerful, but only very few ever get the door opened.

How do we remove the veils of consciousness that have our energies so dispersed in the first place? This is a question of knowing oneself. Consciousness is limited by the desires we have. And desires surface from a sense of incompleteness. And this sense of incompleteness comes from not knowing what’s on the other side of the vault door. For in reality, we are whole, not partial beings.

A bank robber, trying to get into a vault in the middle of the night, is not also thinking about other ways to be rich. That’s because he knows what’s on the inside of the vault. All of his attention and energy are directed towards cutting through the steel, to get the riches behind the door. All of his thoughts have been superseded by the task at hand.

It’s the same for the advanced spiritual aspirant. He is on a mission to unlock the infinity of consciousness that is within him. Nothing else concerns him. Not the weather, not the stock market, not clothes, cars, sports, or even Osama bin Laden. Only infinite consciousness.

To meet such a person is to experience what personal magnetism is. I have met several people of this caliber, both here and abroad, and it is a transforming experience. It performed revolutions in my consciousness.

I knew a man from Iran who lived the last few years of his life in the United States. He didn’t speak English but his presence communicated so much that words were not even necessary. He was magnetism personified. His name was Espandiar Vesali. He used to harvest cherry and apple trees in Iran. He had a simple heart and a deep love for God. As a boy, he attended a school in India run by Meher Baba, where he was ushered into the realms of consciousness that is reserved for saints.

I heard him give a talk, via a translator, and someone asked him at the end of his talk (a talk in which he shared intimately of his own experience of traversing the inner planes of consciousness) that in such a stressful world, full of war and injustice, how can we focus on God.

And his answer was, “Let someone else worry about things going badly. Your job is to love God.” That is an example of aligning your energies with your priorities. Back to the bank vault metaphor, the guy breaking into the vault has his job. It’s up to someone else to be the lookout guy.

To the spiritual aspirant, letting someone else worry about politics and injustice is a much more effective way of reaching the goal, if the goal is to experience consciousness in the higher realms.

Do that and you will be providing a far greater service to humanity than someone worrying over things going badly ever could. And what is the service? The service that Emerson provided, and that every other soul that reflected the light of inner consciousness provided. It’s what inspired Thoreau to walk the 20 miles. It’s called personal magnetism.

You mentioned letting someone else worry about politics. What if the goal is political? What if the goal is politics?

How does holism play into political philosophy?
