Before I share with you about making an identity shift to joy, I want to touch on identity shifts in general. Making an identity shift was a key component in Steve Pavlina’s recent and excellent piece on how to be a millionaire. For instance, instead of carrying $20 in your wallet, you would carry $400 or $500, because that is the mindset of a millionaire. The theory is if you are not open to the thought of carrying $400 or $500 in your wallet, then maybe you are resistant to the energy flow that comes with the package. It sounds like a good idea.
And it raises a question: If making an identity shift is so crucial in reaching the goal of becoming a millionaire, then is it required to move into the higher realms of consciousness? How would we act differently?
The attractor energy patterns that operate in the world act like magnets. The higher attractor energy patters, such as love, peace, and dignity have a strengthening effect; the lower ones, such as shame, violence, and hatred have a weakening effect. If you find yourself in a higher attractor energy field, you will attract more high energy. And if you are in a low attractor energy field, you will find yourself attracting more low energy, making it harder and harder to escape from it.
Reading the Bhagavad Gita would strengthen you, proven by the kinesiology testing performed by Dr. David Hawkins, documented in his book, Power vs. Force
. Watching a movie with excessive sexual violence and exploitation would be weakening. Guess what? We get to choose which one of these patterns to focus on.
Last night I watched a violent movie. Why did I do that? I guess I was too tired to read and I was trying to find something my wife Maggie and I could do together. I didn’t realize it was going to be that violent. She didn’t like the violence and went into another room to read. I stayed in the living room and watched the movie until the end. Looking back on it tonight I can see it had a deadening effect on my consciousness. I felt less alive, less joyful. This was an identity shift in the wrong direction.
If you use Steve Pavlina’s concept of having an identification shift in becoming a millionaire as a metaphor for reaching a goal of higher consciousness, I guess what I did last night was equivalent of throwing away $2,000. It didn’t break the bank, but it wasn’t a healthy thing to do. It was a waste of time. If I am on a consciousness journey going from point A to point B, then last night, at best, was the equivalent of my car breaking down and not making any progress.
Each day there are so many opportunities to choose the higher attractor pattern over the lower. And any time you are inclined to choose the lower, ask yourself, “Why?” Why would anyone want to lower his or her energy level and become weaker? We want to go forward.
We make choices between the lower and the higher when we are deciding what to read. We make similar choices when we are deciding what to watch on TV or at the movies. We also make this kind of choice when we are deciding what kind of music to listen to.
What other choices influence our energy? Who we associate with, what kind of job we have, where we live, and what we eat.
An organic grapefruit is strengthening. A non-organic one is less so.
What else? How about our words? We can use uplifting words or we can use words that have negative connotations.
For example, according to Dr. Hawkins, some words strengthen and some weaken. Below is a short list of words. The ones on the left will strengthen you. The ones on the right, will weaken you:
Confident / Arrogant
Confronting / Harassing
Conscious / Unaware
Considerate / Indulgent
Constructive / Destructive
Contending / Competing
Courageous / Reckless
Defending / Attacking
Democratic / Dictatorial
Determined / Stubborn
Devoted / Possessive
Equal / Superior
What about music? When we listen to songs about love, we are being strengthened. When we listen to music with words about hate and violence, we are being weakened. Which one do you want to choose?
Who do you socialize with? Are they positive in their outlook on life? Are they loving? Are they encouraging and empathetic? If not, why do you spend time with them? Just because you have known certain friends for years is not reason enough to be with them. If they are full of toxic energy, stay away.
Where do you live? Is it in a beautiful area, or is it run down? Are the people in your neighborhood friendly or cold? Do you feel safe or in danger?
What about your career? Are you doing what you love? Are you happy in what you do? Is it honest? Is it healthy? Are you in a good mood at work or are you miserable? Are you relaxed or stressed? These are important questions to ask if you want to raise your vibrational energy. It could mean the difference between breaking free or staying in a vortex of negative energy for the rest of your life.
If your goal is to experience inner joy as a constant companion in all that you do, the kind that arises from within rather than from outside, then you want to try to make an identity shift as if you already had that state of consciousness. One characteristic of this state, according to Dr. Hawkins, is a capacity for enormous patience and the persistence of a positive attitude in the face of prolonged adversity.
Why would anyone want to shy away from that? Isn’t a positive attitude more enjoyable than a negative attitude?
If you consistently choose the higher attractor energy patterns over the lower ones, you will have this persistent positive attitude. How is that? Because the higher attractor patterns attract more positive energy. The energy builds and magnifies. It’s just like money, collecting interest in the bank. The more you have, the more you make. And the more you love, the more love you have. It’s a cornucopia of light.
